Thanks for sharing this, though you don't actually need to do this to get a new line in any text field in Unity, including the TextMesh component. Just press ALT+ENTER and then type away; boom new line! Also, if setting string from code, simply use the escape code for new line "\n" in the string itself; "Hi there,\nThis sentence is on a new line.".
