Known Issues

Older versions of the Autodesk FBX exporter do not always export second UV channels properly. If using Max r9, you should preferably be using the exporter labeled version 2006.11.1. Information on using this plugin can be found here: http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/Manual/HOWTO-ImportObjectMax.html. At the time of this writing, the Autodesk archives have 2006.11.2 as the most recent version of the FBX exporter for 3DS Max r8 and r9, and version 2009.1 for 3DS Max r2008 and r2009.

Currently For Unity 2.1:

  • FBX older rather 2006.11.1 present the previous issues mentioned.
  • FBX 2006.11.1 and 2006.11.2 are the recommended version so far. There are not a noticeable difference between 2006.11.1 and 2006.11.2.
  • FBX 2009.1 can hang the Unity UI interface.

Unity Scale Calibration

As with most things, there are several approaches to setting the scale within Max to export cleanly to Unity.

  • One approach is to configure Max to work with the default Unity settings. To do this, from the Max menu choose "Customize -> Units Setup..." In the dialog box that appears, press the "System Unit Setup" button and in the next dialog box, set the "System Unit Scale" to be "1 Unit = 1.0 Centimeters". Press "Ok" and in the first dialog box under "Display Unit Scale" select the "Metric" radio button and "Meters" from the drop down box directly underneath. Press "Ok" to close this dialog box and you should be ready to model and export cleanly to Unity!
